The couples costume embodies one of the major themes of the presidential campaign, especially after Trump promised to prosecute the former secretary of state during the second US presidential debate.
“If I win,” Trump said on October 9, “I’m going to instruct the attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation because there’s never been so many lies, so much deception.” Trump added: “[W]e’re going to get a special prosecutor because people have been, their lives have been destroyed for doing one fifth of what you’ve done.”
Before that, “Lock her up!” was a chant favorited by Trump rally-goers nationwide familiar with the Clinton’s body of corruption.
The costume’s meaning took on greater significance after a Friday announcement in which FBI Director James Comey declared the agency was re-opening their investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server.
The Twitter hashtag #HillaryforPrison also took off the Monday morning after the FBI’s announcement, but some claim the social media company suppressed the original message by intentionally allowing the misspelling #HillaryforPrision to go viral.
Additionally, new Wikileaks Monday showing DNC chairwoman Donna Brazile shared debate questions with Hillary Clinton helped the hashtag’s popularity.
In the past Hillary has also expressed support for the “Hillary for Prison” movement.
